Tea Seed Powder
General Characteristics:
Tea Seed Powder (or Tea Seed Meal) is the remaining residues after the oil has been extracted (cold pressed) from the seeds of the Camellia oleifera trees. It is available in powder form (cake-like shape is no longer available for export.) Tea seed powder is unique in containing a substance called saponin, which is a toxin reacting agent with blood. Tea seed powder has diverse applications.
Aquaculture Application:
- Tea Seed Powder (dried and pressed seeds of Camellia sp.)
is extensively used in aquaculture to eliminate unwanted fishes and harmful insects in the prawn ponds.
- Detoxify quickly in water and are not injurious to people.
- It will not leave cumulative adverse residues.
- Tea seed meal is readily available and thus economical to use.

Farm Application:
- It is used as an natural way of insecticide verse chemical, effective to snails slugs (avoid parasitism) in a rice field, vegetable and fruit farms.
- It cannot be an obstacle for the growth of the roots of plants.
- When comparing tea seed powder with other chemical products, it is often much safer, reasonably priced and easy to use.
Household Application:
- It could be used as a detergent, a natural cleaning product which does not leave cumulative adverse residues.
Tea Seed Meal Price:
Besides supply and demand, the price of tea seed meal is determined by tea trees to harvest.
Summer precipitation is usually the main factor for a good harvest. Tea tree seeds reach harvest in October each year.
The tea seed meal price for the next year is often predictable during November this year.
For a poor harvest year, tea seed meal is often sold out toward the end of following year.
